Prerequisite:

Must have completed Defensive Carbine II and Defensive Handgun III

Objectives:

The goals of this class are to help you on your journey with your use of a AR platform firearm for personal defense by teaching and practicing safety and marksmanship skills. In addition, we will teach you operation and maintenance, how to sling and present, how to apply marksmanship and situational awareness to defensive shooting, and how to reload and clear malfunctions to stay in the fight.

What to Expect:

This course will be taught over 2 days. There will be classroom instruction on the evening of the 1st day for approximately 3-4 hours. The 2nd day will be entirely at the range and will be about 9 hours with a 30 minute break for lunch. The round count will be about 350 rounds.

Location and Cost:

Range time will be at one of the local shooting ranges. The course fee is $200.00 per student.

What to Bring:

Firearms:

Bring a heavy-duty semi-automatic handgun (no revolvers). The weapon must be fully functional, have all factory installed safety devices intact, and have no dangerous modifications such as a “hair” trigger less than 4 pounds, removed trigger guard, pinned grip safety, etc. Pocket pistols are not allowed. A suitable backup weapon is strongly recommended, as many weapons fail at some point during the training.

AN AR 15 platform firearm with a sling, preferably chambered in 5.56 or .223.  AR 10 platform firearms chambered in .308 or 7.62 are acceptable.

No AK’s or platforms other than AR will be allowed in this class.

Support Equipment:

ELECTRONIC HEARING PROTECTION is mandatory.

A minimum of three (3) magazines are required, (at least four (4) are recommended).

Magazine pouches are recommended and should be worn on the belt on the support side of the body or on a chest rig. Pants pockets will work.

A dump pouch would be very handy.

Wrap around impact-resistant eye protection.

Loose pants with a sturdy belt, hat with a brim, comfortable, sturdy closed toe shoes or boots, and weather appropriate clothing, layers recommended that prevents hot brass from going places it shouldn’t.

Ammunition:

TBD (minimum) rounds of factory new ammunition. No reloaded or re-manufactured. No steel core (62gr green tip).

We require the use of jacketed bullets. The bullet design may be full metal jacket (FMJ), total metal jacket (TMJ), jacketed soft point (JSP), or jacketed hollow point (JHP).

Other Recommended Items:

Knee and Elbow pads

Tactical Gloves

Collared shirt

Sunblock

Portable chair for use during lectures (we will have them but if you have a favorite)

Water bottle (we will supply refills)

Lunch and snacks (we will have a short lunch break; you will not have time to leave the range for lunch)

Pad and paper (for taking notes)

Location and Cost:

We will be using the Chaffee County Range located between Buena Vista and Poncha Springs on Hwy 285. The course fee is $220 per student.
